San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Public Tasting: February 16, 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion; entry fee is $50 if purchased in advance, $70 if purchased at the door. This is a public tasting of the wines that were evaluated in the 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the world’s largest competition of American wines. There were over 3,000 entries at this year’s event, and this weekend, you’ll get the opportunity to taste everything for yourself while taking in expansive views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. For tickets, go to the event’s Web site by clicking here, or call (415) 345-7575.

Wines of Argentina at the Argentine Embassy: February 28, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Argentine Embassy; entry fee is $59 for the time being, but will increase to $79 as the event gets closer. Granted, this event doesn’t occur until two weeks from now, but it’s one that will reward planning ahead. At the discounted price, you’ll get to taste an array of Argentine varietals, and a buffet of traditional Argentine foods is included. New York City: Just a note to the New Yorkers out there that I’m keeping an eye out for wine events in your area — including within the City itself and in the Hudson River Valley, Long Island and the Finger Lakes region – but so far I’m not seeing much worth recommending. Sorry, but we don’t want to waste your time. As the weather warms up, though, we expect this to change, so stay tuned!

Dear Wine Rabbi:
I believe our 3rd annual Golden Nose Award event might be of interest to you and your readers! Hosted at the Corning Museum of Glass at the base of the Finger Lakes Region this unique event allows the attendees themselves to be judges at this professionally run wine competition. Basically its a full one day event. Morning: learn how to judge wines. Afternoon: judge the wines themselves, all of which are from the Finger Lakes, many of which will be the latest vintage derived from the 07 harvest which Wine Spectator recently awarded an A-. Evening: attend the awards ceremony, enjoy the hundreds of wines that were judged that afternoon, and dance to live music from the wildly popular (in our region) Virgil Cain.
There is more, like the unique access to prominent winemakers/owners in an intimate setting for hours on end, but this summarizes the gist of things.
If you would like to learn more about the event, please check out the website noted above, or contact me directly at 877-536-2717.
